Outlook 2010 "To:" Field Doesn't Print for EML files
Hi,

We've noticed an issue with Outlook 2010 eml file printing on most std 2010 installs.

When printing an email from any exchange or IMAP mail folder it will print with the std From, To, Subject etc fields as normal, however if we open an eml file (located on the local PC or via a web site) in outlook 2010, the "To" field shows ok but when you go to print the email it's missing.

In the File>Print tab it shows the settings being used are "Memo Style" and if I go to the "Developer Tab>Design This Form" and then right click on the To field and click properties and go to the Validation tab and check the "Include this field for Printing and Save As" is already ticked, therefore it's not that this setting is disabled.

The only way to get the email to print the To field is to open the email then click on the "Save Icon" and then go to File>Print and it will then print the To field.

Sometimes depending on PC I've had to also go into the "Developer>Design This Form" and then click save but generally just doing a save works.

The emls are generally opened from our web based document management system but saving them to local folder and opening from there makes no difference. I've confirmed that the emls are correct and generated by exchange so there's nothing malformed about the emls.

I also found a MS KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2512788) at one point mentioning a similar issue in Outlook 2007 with the memo style but the hotfix didn't apply to 2010 and I've already updated Office 2010 with the latest updates.

There was also another reference that said that in Outlook 2003 it used to happen randomly if Internet Explorer 7 was on the PC but all these PCs are on Windows 7 with Internet Explorer 9.

This seems to happen on all our Outlook 2010 installs and I've not been able to find any settings or other articles that can help.

Has anyone seen or heard of this issue or have any advise on how to resolve as we don't really want to have to send an email to all users advising them they must click save before printing when dealing with eml files?

Thanks

Hi,

This is indeed a known issue in Outlook 2007 and could be fixed by the hotfix KB2512788. But the problem still exist in the Outlook2010 and has not been fixed yet.

I would like to say that the EML file is created by Outlook Express or Windows Mail, and Microsoft suggest we try to use the new products, such as Outlook 2010 and Windows Live Mail to avoid compatibility issue with the part of function in old version.

Thank you for understanding.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your reply. I had feared this was still an outstanding bug with Outlook 2010. We're starting to migrate users to Office 2010 and our email vault solution is web based and stores all emails as eml files and then passes to outlook for opening and printing which means this is most likely going to become a real issue for us in the near future.

I take it you're not aware of a timeframe for MS releasing a fix for this for Outlook 2010?

Thanks,

Ian.

When will there be a fix for this problem for Outlook 2010?  Is the problem fixed in Outlook 2013?

Hi!

Please, I'm facing this problem with users running Outlook 2010 (Win XP/7). Is there any hotfix that would solve this very unpleasant issue?

Thank you very much in advance! :)
